More civilians now killed by US, Afghan forces than by insurgents: UN

http://bit.ly/2GEcYjt
More civilians now killed by US, Afghan forces than by insurgents
Afghan civilians are for the first time being killed in greater numbers by US and pro-government forces than by the Taliban and other insurgent groups, a UN report released Wednesday revealed.

The bloody milestone comes as the US steps up its air campaign in Afghanistan while pushing for a peace deal with the Taliban, who now control or influence more parts of the country than at any time since they were ousted in 2001.

During the first three months of 2019, international and pro-government forces were responsible for the deaths of 305 civilians, whereas insurgent groups killed 227 people, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said in a quarterly report.

Most of the deaths resulted from air strikes or from search operations on the ground, primarily conducted by US-backed Afghan forces, some of which UNAMA said: "appear to act with impunity".

"UNAMA urges both the Afghan national security forces and international military forces to conduct investigations into allegations of civilian casualties, to publish the results of their findings, and to provide compensation to victims as appropriate," the report states.

UNAMA started compiling civilian casualty data in 2009 amid deteriorating security conditions in Afghanistan.

It is the first tally since records began that shows pro-government forces have killed more civilians than insurgents have.

In 2017, the US military started quickening its operational tempo after President Donald Trump loosened restrictions and made it easier for American forces to bomb Taliban positions.

While other nations may contribute logistical or technical support, it is US aircraft that conduct most strikes. Afghanistan´s fledgeling air force is also flying more sorties.

The US has sent huge B-52 bombers on runs over the country and benefited from an increase in aerial hardware as operations against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria tapered off.

UNAMA's report did, however, find that overall, civilian casualties dropped 23 per cent as compared to the first three months of 2018.

In all, UNAMA documented 1,773 casualties last quarter: 581 deaths and 1,192 injured -- the lowest first-quarter toll since 2013.

The drop was driven by a decrease in the use of suicide bomb attacks, but UNAMA did not know if this trend came as a result of a harsh winter or if the Taliban were trying to kill fewer civilians during peace talks.

Still, UNAMA chief Tadamichi Yamamoto, who also serves as the UN secretary general's special representative for Afghanistan, said a "shocking number" of civilians are being killed or maimed.

"All parties must do more to safeguard civilians," Yamamoto said in a statement.

Last year was the deadliest yet for Afghan civilians, with 3,804 killed, according to UNAMA.

New Zealand, France announce bid to end violent extremism online

http://bit.ly/2W5wPNJ
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and French President Emmanuel Macron
New Zealand and France will bring together global leaders at a Paris summit next month aimed at stopping social media being used to organise and promote terrorism, the countries´ leaders announced Wednesday.

Political leaders and tech company executives have been called to a meeting — to be co-chaired by New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and French President Emmanuel Macron — in Paris on May 15.

They will be asked to commit to a pledge called the "Christchurch Call" designed to eliminate terrorist and violent extremist content online.

Ardern said the March 15 terrorist attacks on two mosques in Christchurch, in which 50 Muslim worshippers were killed, saw social media used "in an unprecedented way as a tool to promote an act of terrorism and hate".

The mosque attacks were live-streamed on the internet and showed distressing footage of the gunman firing indiscriminately at men, women and children.

In Paris, the Elysee presidential palace said the meeting would ensure that "new, concrete measures are taken so that what happened in Christchurch does not happen again".

Nearly six weeks after the massacre, social media sites are still struggling to stamp out copies of the gunman´s video.

"We´re calling on the leaders of tech companies to join with us and help achieve our goal of eliminating violent extremism online at the Christchurch Summit in Paris," Arden said.

The meeting will be held alongside the "Tech for Humanity" meeting of G7 Digital Ministers, and France´s separate "Tech for Good" summit also scheduled for May 15.

"We all need to act, and that includes social media providers taking more responsibility for the content that is on their platforms, and taking action so that violent extremist content cannot be published and shared," Ardern said.

"It´s critical that technology platforms like Facebook are not perverted as a tool for terrorism, and instead become part of a global solution to countering extremism."

Macron has previously stated his ambition for France to take a leading role in devising new regulatory measures "to reconcile technology with the common good".

Ardern said the joint action was not aimed at curbing freedom of expression but at preventing extremist violence from spreading online.

"I don´t think anyone would argue that the terrorist on March 15 had a right to livestream the murder of 50 people and that is what this call is very specifically focussed on," she said.

A French Muslim group said on Monday it was suing Facebook and YouTube for allowing the grisly live broadcast of Christchurch massacre to be streamed.

The livestream lasting 17 minutes was shared extensively on a variety of internet platforms and uploaded again nearly as fast as it could be taken down.

New Zealand has banned both the livestreamed footage of the attack and the manifesto written and released by Brenton Tarrant, who faces 50 murder charges and 39 of attempted murder following the mosque attacks.

'Shattered': Sri Lankan cricketer recounts church bombing horror

http://bit.ly/2PthXq7
Sri Lankan cricketer Dasun Shanaka
Sri Lankan cricketer Dasun Shanaka barely survived one of the deadly blasts that killed more than 350 people in the island nation on Easter Sunday, and says the horrific scenes have left him "scared" to go out.

The 27-year-old all-rounder skipped Easter service at St Sebastian´s Church in his hometown of Negombo because of a long trip the day before, he told ESPNcricinfo.

It was among six churches and hotels targeted by suicide bombers who killed 359 people and injured hundreds more -- the worst violence seen in the country since a civil war ended a decade ago.

"Normally I would have gone to church... (but) I was tired," Shanaka told the website in comments published Monday.

"That morning, when I was at my house, I heard a sound, and then people were saying a bomb had gone off at the church. I rushed there, and I´ll never forget the scene.

"The entire church was destroyed, absolutely shattered, and people were dragging lifeless bodies outside."

The destruction at St Sebastian´s was still visible Tuesday -- parts of broken religious statues and smashed pews littered the floor -- as funerals of victims were held.

More people are believed to have died in the blast at St Sebastian´s than any of the other attacks, with the local hospital receiving more than 100 bodies.

"If you saw the scene, you would know there was no way anyone inside could have survived, because simply the debris from the blast had injured everyone even in the vicinity," Shanaka said.

After the blast, the cricketer rushed to the church looking for his mother and grandmother, who were at the Easter service. Both survived, he said, but his grandmother required surgery because she was hit in the head with shrapnel.

Shanaka -- who has played three Tests, 19 one-day internationals, and 27 Twenty20s for Sri Lanka -- described his hometown as "a safe haven of sorts" where there have never been communal problems.

But he said that the Easter blasts have shaken that sense of security: "I´m scared to go onto the streets."

One million species risk extinction due to humans: draft UN report

http://bit.ly/2ZzjIXc
UN report that One million species risk extinction due to humans
Up to one million species face extinction due to human influence, according to a draft UN report obtained by AFP that painstakingly catalogues how humanity has undermined the natural resources upon which its very survival depends.

The accelerating loss of clean air, drinkable water, CO2-absorbing forests, pollinating insects, protein-rich fish and storm-blocking mangroves — to name but a few of the dwindling services rendered by Nature — poses no less of a threat than climate change, says the report, set to be unveiled May 6.

Indeed, biodiversity loss and global warming are closely linked, according to the 44-page Summary for Policy Makers, which distills a 1,800-page UN assessment of scientific literature on the state of Nature.

Delegates from 130 nations meeting in Paris from April 29 will vet the executive summary line-by-line. Wording may change, but figures lifted from the underlying report cannot be altered.

"We need to recognise that climate change and loss of Nature are equally important, not just for the environment, but as development and economic issues as well," Robert Watson, chair of the UN-mandated body that compiled the report, told AFP, without divulging its findings.

"The way we produce our food and energy is undermining the regulating services that we get from Nature," he said, adding that only "transformative change" can stem the damage.

Deforestation and agriculture, including livestock production, account for about a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions, and have wreaked havoc on natural ecosystems as well.

´Mass extinction event´

The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) report warns of "an imminent rapid acceleration in the global rate of species extinction."

The pace of loss "is already tens to hundreds of times higher than it has been, on average, over the last 10 million years," it notes.

"Half-a-million to a million species are projected to be threatened with extinction, many within decades."

Many experts think a so-called "mass extinction event" — only the sixth in the last half-billion years — is already under way.

The most recent saw the end of the Cretaceous period some 66 million years ago, when a 10-kilometre-wide asteroid strike wiped out most lifeforms.

Scientists estimate that Earth is today home to some eight million distinct species, a majority of them insects.

A quarter of catalogued animal and plant species are already being crowded, eaten or poisoned out of existence.

The drop in sheer numbers is even more dramatic, with wild mammal biomass — their collective weight — down by 82 percent.

Humans and livestock account for more than 95 percent of mammal biomass.

Population growth

"If we´re going to have a sustainable planet that provides services to communities around the world, we need to change this trajectory in the next ten years, just as we need to do that with climate," noted WWF chief scientist Rebecca Shaw, formerly a member of the UN scientific bodies for both climate and biodiversity.

The direct causes of species loss, in order of importance, are shrinking habitat and land-use change, hunting for food or illicit trade in body parts, climate change, pollution, and alien species such as rats, mosquitoes and snakes that hitch rides on ships or planes, the report finds.

"There are also two big indirect drivers of biodiversity loss and climate change — the number of people in the world and their growing ability to consume," said Watson.

Once seen as primarily a future threat to animal and plant life, the disruptive impact of global warming has accelerated.

Shifts in the distribution of species, for example, will likely double if average temperature go up a notch from 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) to 2C.

So far, the global thermometer has risen 1C compared with mid-19th century levels.

The 2015 Paris Agreement enjoins nations to cap the rise to "well below" 2C. But a landmark UN climate report in October said that would still be enough to boost the intensity and frequency of deadly heatwaves, droughts, floods and storms.

Global inequity

Other findings in the report include:

- Three-quarters of land surfaces, 40 percent of the marine environment, and 50 percent of inland waterways across the globe have been "severely altered".

- Many of the areas where Nature´s contribution to human wellbeing will be most severely compromised are home to indigenous peoples and the world´s poorest communities that are also vulnerable to climate change.

- More than two billion people rely on wood fuel for energy, four billion rely on natural medicines, and more than 75 percent of global food crops require animal pollination.

- Nearly half of land and marine ecosystems have been profoundly compromised by human interference in the last 50 years.

- Subsidies to fisheries, industrial agriculture, livestock raising, forestry, mining and the production of biofuel or fossil fuel energy encourage waste, inefficiency and over-consumption.

The report cautioned against climate change solutions that may inadvertently harm Nature.

The use, for example, of biofuels combined with "carbon capture and storage" — the sequestration of CO2 released when biofuels are burned — is widely seen as key in the transition to green energy on a global scale.

But the land needed to grow all those biofuel crops may wind up cutting into food production, the expansion of protected areas or reforestation efforts.

PM Khan’s statement on Pakistan soil being used by terrorists taken out of context: spokesperson

http://bit.ly/2GCsFHS
Prime Minister Imran Khan and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani
Prime Minister Imran Khan’s statement on Pakistani soil being used by terrorists, made during his recent visit to Iran, was taken out of context, a spokesperson from the Prime Minister House said on Wednesday.

"There has been a lot of debate about PM’s statement on the use of Pakistan soil. The statement has been largely taken out of context. PM Imran Khan was talking about non-state actors using Pakistani soil under foreign influence to carry out activities in Pakistan or coordinating from Pakistan," the spokesperson clarified following criticism by some politicians from the opposition over the premier’s remarks.

"Case in point is Kulbhushan Jadhav/alike and local facilitators. In the same manner, Pakistan is attacked using soil of Iran and Afghanistan."

"The same was clearly stated by the PM during his visit to Iran while referring to the latest incident in Balochistan. This is why the PM is making all out efforts for peace across whole region."

"PM’s statement being linked to any other context is an effort to misinterpret the expression which doesn’t serve Pakistan in any way," the spokesperson added.

Prime Minister Imran, during his maiden official visit to Iran on Monday, had resolved “not to allow any militant group to operate from Pakistan’s soil.”

"We have been facing [impact] of terrorism since long. In Pakistan, we have suffered more terrorism than probably any other country. In the past [few years] we have lost around 70,000 people. Full appreciation must be made for our security agencies, with the way they tackled terrorism in Pakistan," the premier had said in a press conference in Tehran.

"We are committed to not let it happen again. We will not allow any militant group to operate from our soil. We will not allow our soil to be used by anyone against anyone,” he had added.

Four finance ministers were changed during PPP's term: Asad Umar

http://bit.ly/2PqwgeY
Former Finance Minister Asad Umar
Former Finance Minister Asad Umar on Wednesday criticised the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and said four finance ministers were changed during their term.

Addressing the National Assembly for the first time after being removed as finance minister, Umar said, "I never called Bilawal Bhutto Zardari a traitor. He alleged that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) killed the economy."

"Bilawal said that the government is incapable and a failure so I thought I should raise the curtain and unveil the truth behind the allegations," Umar said.

The former finance minister said that the growth was the slowest during PPP's last tenure with Asif Ali Zardari as president. "Did no one tell Bilawal that during his party's government the growth rate was 2.8%? Inflation stood at 12.3% during Zardari's term," he added.

Stating that "Bilawal is very concerned that debts are rising", the former finance minister said, "During PPP's government, debts rose by 135%."

"Bilawal Sb, during your government four finance ministers were changed. One by one, all four brave finance ministers kept failing," Umar said while responding to the PPP chairman's criticism of the cabinet reshuffle.

In response to Bilawal saying that the PTI government is incapable, the former finance minister asked, "Bilawal Sb was your father's government the most incompetent and incapable?"

"Today the accountability is being done of the corruption that was done during your term," he further lashed out.

Regarding the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) not meeting its targets, Umar said, "We are working on this. During PPP's five-year term, FBR targets were reduced by 5% yearly."

Umar continued, "The current government is facing a lot of big economic mafias. If you wish to represent people, then you will have to stand up against these mafia."

The former finance minister further said, "Truth should be spoken before the nation. There is no easy solution. Difficult decisions have been made and will need to be made in the future as well."

"If the nation sees that everything will be fixed in the future then they will accept the difficult decisions," he added.

"We will have to come out of this crisis and we will God willing," Umar said.

Responding to the former finance minister, PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari tweeted, "Former finance minister who was removed because his own PM said he removed incompetent ministers, is now lecturing us about how PPP's economic policies were flawed. Obviously, Imran Khan doesn’t agree as he appointed President Zardari’s finance minister as incompetent Asad’s replacement."

Bilawal slams PM Khan not made announcement to continue Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline

Chairman of Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Prime Minister Imran Khan
Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Wednesday slammed Prime Minister Imran Khan for not making any announcement to continue the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline during his recent trip to Iran.

“Despite his visit to Iran, no announcement was made by the PM to continue President Zardari’s Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline. Given our energy needs, ever-increasing price of gas and unequal load-shedding sad that govt also caving to international pressure instead of putting Pakistan first,” Bilawal tweeted.

During PM Imran’s recent trip to Iran, President Hassan Rouhani said his country was ready to meet the oil and gas requirements of Pakistan, adding that Iran had already taken measures to construct a gas pipeline to the Pakistani border.

He said Iran was also ready to increase exports of electricity to Pakistan.

The president said Iran was also interested in establishing links between Gwadar and Chahbhar ports in order to strengthen the bilateral trade relations.

Sindh High Court ordered NAB to wrap up investigation against Agha Siraj Durrani in four weeks
The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday ordered the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to wrap up the investigation against Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani in four weeks.

During the hearing of the case today, SHC Judge Justice Ahmed Ali Sheikh asked the NAB investigating officer how far along the investigation was.

To this, the NAB investigating officer told the court that Durrani’s remand had been completed along with the preliminary investigation. However, more investigation is under way.

Addressing the NAB director, the court ordered the probe be completed by May 29 and asked the accountability watchdog to submit the report.

The court further asked how many illegal cars Durrani owns, to which the NAB investigator said, “Durrani has bought 25 cars illegally.”

When asked till when the bureau will submit the investigation report, the NAB investigator said they need four weeks to submit it.

To this, the court said if the investigation is not completed in four weeks, then it will give its verdict on the evidence that has been presented to it.

At this, Durrani’s lawyer stated that his client is in prison and that the court should have a bail hearing. To this, the court said, "Here we have people lying in prisons for years."

Durrani’s lawyer further told the court, that his client has taken the stance that his arrest was illegal and that he was arrested for political revenge. “The women of the house were harassed during NAB’s raid,” he added.

He continued, “NAB has been unable to present any credible evidence till now and his arrest should be declared illegal. The inquiry should be closed and he should be released on bail.”

The court then ordered the accountability watchdog to wrap up the investigation in four weeks.

Polio campaign: 9 more suspects arrested for attacking Peshawar hospital

http://bit.ly/2Gv3UfK
Police in Peshawar arrested nine more suspects for faking the illness of school children
Police in Peshawar arrested nine more suspects on Wednesday for faking the illness and hospitalisation of school children in Mashokhel village and setting a hospital on fire to spread panic and misinformation about the ongoing countrywide polio campaign.

Earlier on Tuesday, police arrested Nazar Muhammad, a resident of Peshawar's Mashokhel area, after videos circulating on Twitter showed him standing in the medical complex, where the children from a local school were admitted on Monday with complaints of illness following administration of the anti-polio vaccine, and instructing them to "fall asleep" and pretend to be unconscious.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Peshawar Sahibzada Sajjad said that the school principal's brother was among the nine arrested for damaging the property of the medical complex.

The nine suspects were arrested after being identified in videos and two pistols and as many Kalashnikovs were seized from their possession, the Peshawar SP said.

"A total 10 suspects have been arrested so far of which five have been nominated in the First Information Report (FIR). A case was registered against 12 people in total," he added.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on Monday launched a three-day anti-polio campaign, in which thousands of polio workers were tasked to visit schools and madrassas to administer the oral anti-polio vaccine to children under five years of age.

In the midst of the campaign, around 40 children from a school in Mashokhel village were brought to a hospital with complaints of diarrhea, nausea and headache.

As the news of the children’s supposed illness spread like wildfire in Peshawar and nearby areas, panicked parents started rushing their children to hospitals.

The Lady Reading Hospital, Khyber Teaching Hospital and the Hayatabad Medical Complex were soon flooded with anxious parents bringing in their children.

Despite assurances from the authorities that the anti-polio vaccine was completely safe, enraged residents broke down the main gate and set fire at the Mashokhel Hospital in Peshawar.

Hafeez Shaikh gives final shape to tax amnesty scheme

http://bit.ly/2UPvf66
Prime Minister chairs the Federal Cabinet meeting
The economic team headed by newly appointed Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance Dr Hafeez Shaikh, tweaks much-awaited tax amnesty scheme which will be unveiled soon as a comprehensive document.

The fine-tuning amnesty plan was communicated to the federal cabinet at a meeting held at the PM Office on Tuesday.

During the meeting the cabinet took several decisions, including the one for evolving a mechanism to bring inflation down, especially before the arrival of Ramazan.

The cabinet approved reduction in the prices of medicines after taking notice of recent 300 per cent increase in them. It also approved an internal inquiry so that people responsible for such a sharp increase in prices could be taken to task.

The cabinet also gave approval for renewal of contracts for the import of LNG (liquefied natural gas) and the meeting was informed that the government would try to import LNG at the lowest price in the region.

“The economic team of the government headed by Dr Hafeez Shaikh is giving a final shape to the tax amnesty scheme so that a comprehensive document could be presented in a few days,” newly appointed Special Assistant to the PM on Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said in a post-cabinet meeting press conference.

She said the new scheme would be more effective than the previous such schemes in terms of revenue generation. “In the last amnesty scheme announced by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government, people had got registered their off-shore assets, but they did not bring their money to the country. But in the new scheme we will make it mandatory that those who will get benefit from the scheme will have to transfer their money to the country from abroad,” the minister said.

Talking about rising inflation in the country, Ms Awan said the cabinet had expressed concern over the skyrocketing prices of essential items and decided to evolve a mechanism to bring prices down.

She, however, claimed inflation during the eight-month period of the present government was still lower than what it was during the terms of the PML-N and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) governments.

She said the prime minister had asked the authorities concerned to keep a watchful eye on the middlemen between growers and consumers as they were usually responsible for increasing prices of essential items.

PM Khan, she said, had also asked the cabinet members to take performance-oriented initiatives and make only those policies which were beneficial for people. “In this connection the prime minister has given some targets to his economic team,” she added.

She said corruption of previous rulers had plunged the country into a severe economic crisis and caused unbridled inflation. The prime minister has directed the provincial governments to make effective arrangements to control prices during Ramazan.

Ms Awan blamed the previous government for recent increase in gas and electricity tariff, saying the present government had inherited the circular debt from previous rulers. “We have to clear outstanding dues of power and gas companies. If we do not retire circular debt, people can face severe loadshedding of both power and gas,” she added.

Ms Awan said newly appointed Special Assistant to the PM on National Health Dr Zafarullah Mirza has been tasked to hold meetings with all stakeholders so that prices of medicines could be brought to their previous levels.

She said the money drug companies had earned through inflated prices would be recovered and given to Baitul Mall so that it could be spent on the treatment of poor patients.

She accused the PML-N government of signing the LNG import contracts on the highest price in the region. But, she added, the previous government had capped the prices for many years.

Talking about the PM Khan’s recent visit to Iran, she said the cabinet had termed the visit successful and hoped that the visit would help ending confusions between Iran and Pakistan.

The cabinet also approved a change in the procedure for treating mercy petitions of convicts on death row. In order to simplify the procedure, the cabinet has decided to form a committee comprising all stakeholders to decide such cases before sending them to the president for final nod.

PM Imran Khan orders to bring down drug prices

http://bit.ly/2Vf1StB
Prime Minister Imran Khan directed the relevant authorities to bring down prices of drugs
Prime Minister Imran Khan has directed the relevant authorities to bring down prices of drugs after consultation with all the stakeholders.

Briefing the media following a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information Firdous Ashiq Awan said a meeting with the representatives of pharmaceutical companies and other stakeholders will be held soon to bring down the prices of medicines.

“The additional amount charged by the pharmaceutical companies will be recovered by the government and deposited with the Pakistan Bait-ul-Maal and utilised to provide free treatment to poor patients suffering from various diseases,” she said.

“The prime minister has directed cabinet members to introduce policies in the public interest and improve their performances in order to resolve the issues faced by the people,” Awan said.

“The premier has already assigned targets to his economic team led by Adviser on Finance Dr Hafeez Sheikh in order to create a people-friendly budget.”

She further said the cabinet has decided to have a check on the prices of essential items during the month of Ramazan and keep an eye on hoarders and cartels.

“Inflation during the last eight months of this government is still less compared with the same period of previous two governments,” the media adviser asserted.

Referring to the prime minister’s upcoming visit to China, Awan said a new Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will be signed with China in order to protect our local industry.

“A new FTA will be signed with China during the visit in order to protect the local industry. The existing FTA cannot cater to the interests of the local industry and it had rather negative impacts on it,” Awan told the media.

She added that due to successful diplomacy of the prime minister, China had agreed to sign the new FTA on the pattern of one it had signed with ASEAN countries on much better terms.

Awan further said the cabinet also discussed the LNG agreements signed by the previous government which were expensive and not in the interest of Pakistan. “The new LNG agreements will be transparent and based on competitive pricing,” she said.

“We have to increase our trade with our immediate neighbours to reap the bilateral benefits.”

She added that Adviser to PM on Commerce Abdul Razzak Dawood apprised the cabinet that 450 Pakistani businessmen will visit China to look for business opportunities that would translate into more production, job opportunities and poverty reduction in the country.

Responding to a question about the recent reshuffle, Awan said it was done to improve performance.

“A balanced cabinet comprising elected and technocrat members are a norm all over the world,” she said.

In response to another question, she said Turkey, Russia, China and India were doing trade with Iran through agreements and Pakistan would also take a decision to have trade with Iran keeping its own interest supreme.

She said if the government was not worried about the hike in drug prices, the prime minister would not have removed his close aide from the post of health minister.

The leaders of former ruling parties, she said, were giving lectures on the economy on various television channels but in fact, they and their parties had played havoc with the national economy and the country was on verge of bankruptcy when the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf came to power.

Responding to a question about the proposed asset declaration scheme, she said it would be finalised by the new economic team and then presented to the relevant forum for approval soon.

All Galaxy Fold samples are being retrieved by Samsung

http://bit.ly/2INJUri
All Galaxy Fold samples are being retrieved by Samsung
Samsung is retrieving all Galaxy Fold samples distributed to reviewers, a person with direct knowledge of the matter said on Tuesday, as the firm smarts from the reputational blow of postponing the launch of its first foldable smartphone.

The South Korean tech giant met with embarrassment ahead of the device’s U.S. release on April 26, with a handful of technology journalists reporting breaks, bulges and blinking screens after just a day’s use.

However, the setback for the $1,980 niche device is trivial compared to the Galaxy Note 7 debacle of 2016, when exploding batteries forced Samsung to scrap the flagship model at huge cost. Galaxy Fold shipments this year are likely to make up less than half a percent of Samsung’s annual total, analysts and investors said.

Samsung postponed the Galaxy Fold’s launch for an unspecified period of time while it investigated the damage reports, it said on Monday. Initial findings into the causes, it said, pointed to impact on exposed areas of the screen’s hinges.

A representative declined to comment further on Tuesday.

Though the issue does not hurt Samsung’s balance sheet, the postponement damages the firm’s effort to showcase itself as an innovative first mover, not a fast follower, analysts said.

Daiwa Capital Markets said it saw little impact on Samsung’s earnings, but that the issue is likely to have a bigger impact on supply-chain companies which rely on the tech giant.

Reflecting that sentiment, Samsung’s share ended 0.3 percent lower versus 0.2 percent gain of the broader market. Parts suppliers, however, suffered steeper declines, with hinge maker KH Vatec Co Ltd shedding 3 percent.

A person with direct knowledge of the supply chain said KH Vatec conducted an internal review of hinges used in the Galaxy Fold and found no defects. The supplier declined to comment.

In March, Samsung released a video showing robots folding Galaxy Fold handsets 200,000 times for its durability test.

In some cases, reviewers had peeled off a layer of film which they mistook for a disposable screen protector.

“It’s disastrous that Samsung sent samples to reviewers without clear instructions on how to handle the device,” said analyst Kim Young-woo at SK Securities.

Samsung planned to sell 1 million Galaxy Fold handsets this year, the equivalent of less than half a percent of the 291.3 million smartphones it sold in 2018. Of last year’s the total, 12.8 million were Note series phones, one estimate showed.

“On the bright side, we have an opportunity to nail down this issue and fix it before selling the phones to a massive audience, so they won’t have same complaints,” said a Samsung employee, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Samsung emailed pre-order customers upon delaying the launch, online outlets said on Twitter.

“Your pre-order guarantees your place in the queue for this innovative technology,” Samsung said in the email. “We’ll update you with more specific shipping information in two weeks.”

Maryam Nawaz lashes PM Imran for ‘defaming own country on foreign soil’

http://bit.ly/2UyiwQg
Leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Maryam Nawaz
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Maryam Nawaz on Tuesday criticised Prime Minister Imran Khan for admitting during his visit to Iran that Pakistan’s soil was used for attacks in the neighbouring country.

“Vilifying & defaming your own country on foreign soil, sitting with foreign leaders, does not find a parallel in the national and diplomatic history,” Maryam wrote in a Twitter post.

“Imagine what the Iranian leadership would be thinking!” she added.

Prime Minister Imran, during his maiden official visit to Iran on Monday, resolved not to allow any militant group to operate from Pakistan’s soil.

"We have been facing [impact] of terrorism since long. In Pakistan, we have suffered more terrorism than probably any other country. In the past [few years] we have lost around 70,000 people. Full appreciation must be made for our security agencies, with the way they tackled terrorism in Pakistan," the premier said in a press conference in Tehran.

Bill against forced Conversions sent to standing committee of National Assembly
A bill against forced conversions tabled in the National Assembly on Tuesday was sent to the standing committee after getting support from the Minister of Law Farogh Naseem.

Pakistan People’s Party’s member from minorities Amir Naveed Jeeva moved the bill against forced conversions in the house today.

He however said, “Everyone has right to change the religion by heart.”

“The minorities of Pakistan are today seeing towards this august house,” the MNA said.

The mover of the bill when told the house, he wanted to table a bill against forced conversions, law minister Farogh Naseem responded that it is a basic issue, no one in the house would have any problem with it.

“We have to sit and discuss this problem,” Naseem further said.

The proposed legislation was sent to the concerned standing committee of the house.

The forced conversion became a high pitched issue in the public space after two Hindu girls from Ghotki recently converted to Islam.

A number of the minorities groups asked the federal government to enact immediate laws against the rising issue of forced conversions in the country.

A symposium participated by various human rights groups asked the government to undertake the responsibility for comprehensive legislation against the issue.

They asked the centre and the provinces, to establish an autonomous Minority Rights Commission in order to properly address the issues of the country’s minorities.

PM Imran's statement in Iran ,'You cannot make these stupid statements': Hina Rabbani

http://bit.ly/2GxaoL7
PPP MNA Hina Rabbani Khar
Prime Minister Imran Khan's public acknowledgement in Tehran that terrorists had in the past misused Pakistani territory to undertake attacks against Iran, and other statements concerning foreign countries, came under a blistering attack by the opposition in the National Assembly on Tuesday.

Human Rights Minister Dr Shireen Mazari defended the prime minister, saying his statement was being quoted out of context.

In an unprecedented, albeit bold, move, Imran while speaking at a joint press conference with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani after their bilateral talks on Monday had said: “I know Iran has suffered from terrorism [perpetrated] by groups operating from Pakistan. …we [need to] have trust in each other that both countries will not allow any terrorist activity from their soil. We hope this will build confidence between us.”

The rumpus started when PML-N MNA Khurram Dastagir Khan drew the attention of the house towards the reported statement of the prime minister regarding the use of Pakistan's soil against Iran.

"No prime minister has ever made such a confession on foreign soil," Dastagirsaid, adding that only a day earlier, "the foreign minister had stated that terrorists had entered from Iran to carry out activities in Balochistan."

He said the International Monetary Fund has already linked the bailout package for Islamabad with the findings of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

"Pakistan is exposed internationally by such statements for facing litigation," the PML-N lawmaker said.

He recalled that Imran had previously suggested that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s re-election could help reach a settlement over occupied Kashmir, and alleged that the premier in a public meeting had said that "he could shake hands with Modi but not the opposition". He also accused the prime minister of having said previously that the Pakistani military had created militants.

"The prime minister has committed diplomatic blunders," the PML-N leader alleged. "Through his statements, the [premier] has hit national security."

He said the opposition was not terming Imran "a traitor", but that he needs to come to the house to give an explanation.

PPP MNA Hina Rabbani Khar, who has previously served as the country's foreign minister, was unforgiving in her criticism of Prime Minister Imran's statements.

"We are worried for the country after seeing it continually become a laughing stock, and not for ourselves," she said. "This is not funny anymore. You cannot play with the destiny of this country anymore."

She said although the premier had publicly talked about the use of Pakistani territory against Iran in the past, other people who said much less severe things were "ousted from the country [and] cases were filed against them and their right to be elected was taken away".

"You cannot make these stupid statements and expect us to stand behind you," Khar said.

She claimed that people had been declared "traitors" for engaging with Indian prime minister in the past, but now Prime Minister Imran was "endorsing that if [Modi] is re-elected the Kashmir issue would be resolved".

"Where is your sense of history?" she asked the premier. Khar also criticised his statement regarding an interim set-up in Afghanistan, saying any interference in the internal affairs of another country is "not sophisticated diplomacy".
